About

The Oxford Bibliographical Society (OBS), founded in 1922, is a lively and inclusive group of enthusiasts that seeks to promote a shared interest in bibliographical matters, including manuscripts, printed books, libraries, collections, and the wider book-trade. The OBS is invested in both traditional methods of bibliographical study, and also new and emerging ways of approaching bibliographical objects. Physically based in Oxford, and surrounded by the great bibliographical riches of the city, the OBS is also outwards-looking and is interested in bibliography across the globe.

In order to explore these and related topics, the Society arranges lectures on a wide variety of topics, delivered by both established authorities and speakers newer to the field. We also offer grants, particularly for early career scholars; publish a series of monographs; and organise visits to sites of bibliographical interest, including college and university libraries, ancient public schools, cathedrals, public and private libraries, country houses and palaces.

The OBS warmly welcomes new members. While our events are open to everyone, the benefits of joining the Society include a copy of each new monograph and a discounted price for previous publications. Our membership fees also support the grants we award to early-career bibliographers. Everyone is welcome to apply –academics, book-sellers, students, librarians, collectors, bibliographers, and general enthusiasts.

The Society is keen to build connections with other bibliographical societies, within the United Kingdom and abroad, and so also offers an institutional membership.
